What this page is

Before there is a chemist named Brodie, there is a slippery black solid people write with and grease with. They do not have the word graphene. They often do not even have a clean distinction between graphite and look-alike minerals.

This is the floor of the timeline. Monday posts can start here when the hook is “graphene is new; carbon sheets are not.”

Craft and names

  • Europe called the stuff plumbago or black lead — lead-like mark, not elemental lead. That confusion lasts in the word pencil lead.
  • Graphite as a mineral name is 18th-century scientific German/Latin usage (often tied to A. G. Werner, late 1700s): graphein, to write. The name is about marking paper, not about 2D physics.
  • Swedish and German chemists in the late 18th century (Scheele and others in that conversation) work out that this mineral burns to carbon dioxide / behaves as carbon, separating it from molybdenite and other metallic-looking blacks. Treat textbook dates as consensus history, not as a lab notebook you hold.

Mines and pencils

  • The Borrowdale deposit in Cumbria (Seathwaite) is the famous early-modern European source of unusually pure solid graphite, exploited from the 16th century and tightly controlled. It feeds pencil-making and later strategic uses (moulds, lubrication).
  • Conté in France (1790s, Revolutionary shortage of English graphite) mixes graphite powder with clay and fires rods — the ancestor of graded pencil “leads.” That is powdered graphite, not a monolayer device.
  • Graphite is already an industrial mineral: foundry facings, crucibles, lubrication, later electrodes and (in the 20th century) nuclear moderators. None of that requires knowing a Dirac cone.

What you cannot claim

  • That Neolithic marks or a specific Egyptian cosmetic are graphene. Carbon blacks and soots are not automatically honeycomb monolayers.
  • That anyone “used graphene oxide in antiquity.” GO is a 19th-century chemical product (before-1900).
  • That pencil lead is a graphene product in the 2004 sense. It is polycrystalline graphite plus clay.

Bridge

Once graphite is recognized as layered carbon, 19th-century chemists can try to shove oxygen between the layers. That is Brodie, 1859. 20th-century crystallography then makes the honeycomb stack undeniable (1900-1946).
