What “before graphene” actually contains

People used graphite for centuries — marks on surfaces, lubrication, crucibles, later electrodes and moderator blocks. That is three-dimensional stacked carbon. The modern graphene story is not “humanity discovered carbon sheets in 2004.” It is: when did a single honeycomb sheet become an object you could isolate, identify, and measure as a 2D electronic system?

The 19th century answers a different question: when did chemists start taking graphite apart between the layers?

1859 — Benjamin Collins Brodie

Brodie treats graphite with strong oxidizers (the lineage later called Brodie’s method) and describes a highly lamellar, oxygen-rich product. Later generations read this as early graphite oxide chemistry — sheets forced apart by oxygen functional groups, hydrophilic, swellable, chemically noisy compared with pristine graphene.

Why a Monday history post should care:

  • A large fraction of today’s powders marketed as “graphene” are closer to reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or nanoplatelets than to a Manchester mechanically cleaved monolayer.
  • Boehm’s 1960s monolayer observations (1962) come from the oxide route, not from Scotch tape.
  • Confusing GO / rGO / CVD film / monolayer flake is how both hype and fringe claims get sloppy. The chemical family tree starts here.

Brodie did not isolate graphene. He showed graphite could be chemically unzipped into a lamellar oxide.

Other 19th-century furniture

  • Graphite’s layered crystal nature is increasingly a laboratory fact, not only a miner’s observation.
  • Organic chemistry is learning what “aromatic sheet” means; that vocabulary will later name graphene (graphite + -ene).
  • Industry already consumes graphite. That matters for any claim that graphene “invented” carbon as a commodity.
